GP’s Failure to Treat Bell’s Palsy Results in £9,000 Settlement

Published: 10th July 2024

We were consulted by a 29-year-old man who was taking antibiotics for a wisdom tooth infection. He called his GP and reported symptoms of facial droop and eye closure on the same side for 12 hours. Despite a recording of Bell’s Palsy as his symptom, he was not treated in the short timeframe that is available to treat the condition. The GP had failed to follow the protocol set out for the condition. He should have been prescribed treatment within 72 hours of the onset of Bell’s Palsy symptoms. Earlier prescription would have lessened the residual symptoms he has been left with.

Liability was denied, but the defendant made an offer of £9,000 which was accepted by the Claimant.
