New Centre For Mesothelioma in North East

Thanks to government funding the North East of England has a new cancer research centre, dedicated to Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a form of lung cancer which is caused by inhaling asbestos fibres. The rates of mesothelioma are high in the North East as this area was home to a huge amount of industry. A large number of Ship building, car building and construction was all found in the North East.

Before the dangers of asbestos were discovered it was used extensively in these industries. Therefore the numbers of Mesothelioma are proportionally very high in the North East of England.

Asbestos causes lung cancer when it is disturbed and broken, and releases fibres into the air which are then breathed in.

One of the most difficult aspects of Mesothelioma is that it can take years before victims develop cancer. Therefore it often creeps up on people, and by the time this very aggressive cancer is discovered it is often too late.
